TARTAN DAY 2025

Happy Tartan Day!!

Tartan, a globally recognized textile, is a gift from Scotland to the world. It represents a rich history of Highland tradition and has become a symbol of patriotism, protest, and high fashion.

Tartan Day, celebrated annually on April 6, commemorates Scottish culture and the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320. This declaration, a letter sent to the Pope by Scottish barons, sought recognition of Scotland's independence and is considered Scotland's most iconic document.

While not a major event in Scotland, Tartan Day has gained popularity in countries with significant Scottish populations, including Canada, the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. It provides an opportunity for those with Scottish ancestry and their supporters to celebrate their heritage.

Tartan Day celebrations began in Nova Scotia, Canada, in the mid-1980s and have since spread across the country. Each provincial government has officially recognized April 6 as a day of celebration.

Our very own Tartan is the Edmonton Firefighters Tartan

In 2017, the Edmonton Firefighters Pipes and Drums recognized the need for a tartan that embodied the traditions and values of the Edmonton Fire Department, its members, and the community we serve. This led to the design of a unique tartan that would represent the department and our band for generations to come. More information on the Edmonton Firefighters Tartan design can be found on our website.

Happy Tartan Day!
